A camping trip for just a couple of people is a great way to get away from mundane everyday life.  However, space in tents can be very limited. That is why you should consider getting a 3 man tent instead of a 2 man tent. They are a great option and usually are about the same price.  The one difference is how much room it’s going to provide which is often important.  Here are three times you should consider getting a 3 man tent.

1.  You are tall or weigh more than the average person.  Sure 2 people can fit inside but can any of your stuff or your feet even?   Also, you don’t know what the standard they are comparing measurements to.   They might be thinking that the average person is 5’7” and weighs 130 pounds if this is the case how is someone over 6 ft going to fit inside.  Think about the difference between a queen size mattress and a king size mattress.  If you look at the dimensions they aren’t going to be very different and yet if you are sleeping on one you can definitely tell the difference.  The great thing is tents aren’t as bulky and heavy as the mattress, so just a little more makes a big difference without compromising weight and price.

2.   You are bringing an air mattress or tent cot.  Even if you are the average size that companies are using as the “standard” you might be bringing something else to sleep on.  If you want to bring some sort of camping bed to sleep on like an air mattress it might not fit in the smaller tent. At the same time you don’t necessarily need a cabin tent when there are only 2 campers!   So getting a tent that is made for just one more person can provide you the ability to bring a tent cot or something else to sleep on and not worry too much about space.

3.  Your camping with your wife and she is doing the packing.   Women are notorious for packing much more than they need.  They like to make sure they have the right shoes and outfit for every condition.  This isn’t much different with camping and a 3 man tent will help you both to be happy.  In fact, I can name a bunch of different reasons why you need to bring a couple of different types of outfits just to sleep in.  Maybe it will be too cold so bring warmer pajamas. Also, you could have the opposite problem: it’s too hot because you have a well insulated sleeping bag.  I could keep going but will stop there, you get the idea.  The bottom line is she will get to bring all of her outfits and you won’t have to worry about if you get to sleep inside or under the stars.  Of course, if she bring to much you could always for a cabin tent!
